Featured Musician
Cliff Cole
Cliff Cole, has been playing hammered dulcimer since 1985. He saw his first hammered dulcimer at the Philadelphia folk festival in 1983. Two years latter, at the same festival, he saw John McCutcheon play. He bought his first dulcimer that year.

Cliff’s background is in percussion. Since the age of fifteen, Cliff played the drums in various types of music groups including Rock, Blues, Jazz and folk ensembles. He started playing dulcimer in a bluegrass group in 1987.

That group, named “Steel City Strings”, played at the 1988 Bethlehem Musikfest. His current group, DayBreak has been together for more than a decade. The group has delved into many musical styles including Celtic, old time, American folk and early music. The group has composed many original tunes, and traditional arrangements.

Day Break - Cliff with Anna Lisa Yoder and Rob Yoder

DayBreak is based in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They have played in numerous festivals and venues in the Lehigh Valley, and greater Philadelphia area. Lately, the children of DayBreak members, including Cliff’s daughter Emily, have been singing and playing their instruments with the band. Audiences have enthusiastically received the children's talented playing.

DayBreak produced their first cassette tape recording, “Dawn”, in 1989. Two years later they recorded a Christmas tape called, “Unity - Unique Music for Christmas”.

Cliff has produced a solo, all instrumental CD titled, “Autumn Calling”. Members of DayBreak appear on many selections on the CD. DayBreak is working on a new CD called, “Little Steps”. They hope to release the CD within this year. “Autumn Calling” and “Unity” are available on CD.

Cliff plays exclusively on James Jones instruments. The pure, even tone that spans throughout the whole range make it an exceptional instrument. The damper system has opened up a whole new avenue of creativity and adventure. Cliff has developed a style where he uses the damper pedal in the same manner that a drummer uses a high-hat cymbal. This unique sound adds a whole new dimension to the hammered dulcimer...
